Five Favorites for Friday* in February

I'm joining Suzanne again this year for Five Favorites for Fridays in February. Of course you realize right away that today is, not in fact, Friday. *A minor technicality, to be sure.

With all of the current events in the news bringing us down and February being a difficult month to get through anyway with mid-winter blues and grey skies it helps to focus on the things that make us happy. Think happy thoughts! So, here are my five favorites for this week that I'm turing my thoughts toward…

 #1 ~ Tawny Port

My favorite port is actually bottled in New Hampshire. My fabulous brother in-law gave us a bottle one year for a Christmas present years ago and I fell in love hard. Seriously, this stuff is so good I could wear it like a perfume. But why would I do that if I can consume it instead?  :)

#2 ~ Blue Cheese

My favorite way to enjoy port is with a slice of blue cheese. Oh. My. Goodness. It's like desert! A little sip of port with a little nibble of cheese is a divine experience for your taste-buds.  For those that are not blue cheese fans (who doesn't like blue mold?!)…I'm not going to argue with you, but you're definitely missing out.

#3 ~ Downton Abbey**

And what am I doing while sipping my port and nibbling my cheese? Why, watching Downton Abbey of course! My husband and I save our viewing for our Friday date night. Last year we made due with watching it via the PBS website streaming on my laptop, but this year we bought a season pass on iTunes for Season 2 and then view it on our much nicer, much larger television screen through Apple T.V. It's wonderful! Who needs to go out to have a date? Btw, the version on iTunes is the original U.K. version. I'm not sure if anything gets left out in the episodes PBS airs compared to the U.K. version. Anyone know?

Knitting by Harold Knight 1915

#4 ~ Knitting!

My other favorite occupation while watching Downton Abbey or anything else for that matter is…you guessed it, Knitting! Especially when it's something easy like the ribbing on the cuff of a sock or any other work you can do without thinking. Right now I'm on a sock marathon making gifts to give for birthdays.

Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in Dried Rose
#5 ~ Hand-Dyed Yarn

Or as I like to call it, knitter's crack. I could window shop online for hours looking at the lusciousness like what is pictured above, sighing loudly and making my husband wonder what on earth happened to his formerly sane wife. Don't you just want to touch it and squeeze it and smell it and pet it and roll around in it and…. oh, wait. Ahem, what happened? I lost consciousness for a moment there.

Accentuate the positive in your life and join Suzanne for more Friday Favorites in February!

**A heads up to anyone that hasn't seen Downton Abbey yet and is thinking about watching it….
In Season 1 there are unfortunately a few adult scenes (two as I remember) and they are in the first half of the season. After those two scenes it is fairly clean viewing. We have and continue to watch it without our children. It's what we watch during our couple time. I just wanted to give a fair warning. I didn't want anyone blindsided. If you want more details you can email me.

  4. I've been thinking about checking out Downtown Abbey, it's on Netflix instant stream. And yes, hand-dyed yarn is like crack. Well, actually your description makes it sound more like what catnip is to a cat. Anyway, it's dangerous stuff.

  5. Maria- LOL! You're right! It is rather like catnip, isn't it?!

  6. Hooray! Love it! But what is your favorite blue cheese? Port and cheese may be an indulgence I need to explore for my Downton time!!

  7. Haha, Kelly, I might have to ground myself from your 5 Fav. things posts..because 1) I'm mad I didn't know about that port until now and now I don't know how to get any, 2) annoyed that I haven't purchased one of my favorite cheeses in the world in a really long time, #3 wishing I was into a show, but also kinda glad I'm not, #4 wishing I would knit more instead of clean so much and organize so much, and....#5 I cannot stand Madeline Tosh, because it is so beautiful and I cannot afford it.

    Haha. =)

    1. LOL!!! You know, you're right, Elisa! Well, I can help you out on two things. Most higher-end liquor stores (the ones with a good wine selection) should have some Tawny Port available. BUT, it will be probably more money than what you'd want to pay (it goes up in price the longer it has been aged). Though, for my special cuddle time with my husband I think it's worth it. A regular sized bottle can last us a long time as you only drink it in little sips at a time. And as for knitting vs. being clean and organized, believe me, I should do more of the latter instead of so much knitting. My house has been rather neglected. Once my sock marathon is done I'll have to put down the needles and then pick up the duster and scrub brush. :)
